A single recorded by musician Ben Bebbington before he died has won the backing of celebrities on social media.

A special version of Ben’s song Alone in the Crowd has been recorded as a duet with fellow musician Paul Henshaw and was released on Monday.

Ben, who was also a skilled poet and artist, died after he was the victim of an unprovoked attack by two men in September 2012.

The single is the culmination of Ben’s dream to create a song “more famous than the R Whites Lemonade ad”.

Now the single has won the backing of stars from the worlds of television and music.

Comedian Matt Lucas retweeted the song’s video to his 859,000 followers on Twitter.

Pop star Nerina Pallot – famous for songs like Everybody’s Gone to War, Sophia and Hard Equation, which is featured on the Hyundai i20 car advertisement – also retweeted the song to her 16,000 followers.

Paul said: “The support for Ben’s Song has been brilliant, and to get the endorsement of stars like Matt and Nerina is just the icing on the cake.

“If even a small percentage of their followers buy the song, that would be amazing.

“Ben was a talented musician and we want to do everything we can to make sure his talent is heard by as many people as possible.”

Proceeds from Alone in the Crowd will go to Shrewsbury Ark, a centre for homeless and vulnerable people in Shrewsbury which helped Ben when he was alive.
