Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust is putting the buildings at Wappenshall Wharf back to work this Saturday 17 March by inviting people to set up a table to sell their unwanted items and extending an invitation to the community to come along and shop.
Volunteers from the Trust will also be on hand to talk visitors through the fascinating history of the wharf, including the adjoining ‘skew bridge’ which is a scheduled ancient monument.
The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust secured a 125-year lease on the Wappenshall site, near Apley, from Telford & Wrekin Council in 2009 and is in the process of restoring the buildings and surrounding waterway, which were once a critical part of the canal network and are famous as having been Thomas Telford’s first engineering project.

Trust chairman, Bernie Jones, said: “This is a great opportunity for people to take a look at this fascinating and historic site in an informal way, as well as to enjoy the table top sale, proceeds of which will be used to support the Trust’s work to bring the buildings back to life with a meaningful use.
“We’ll be delighted to welcome anyone and to share the story of this place, which was a key feature of the area’s industrial heritage; a Spaghetti Junction of its time, if you will.â€
Places are available for anyone wishing to set up their table top stall and a space can be secured by calling Mal Evans on 01743 365191 or 07722 147131.
The event will open for general admission at 10am on Saturday and run through most of the day.
Wappenshall Wharf is simple to find by following the turning off the A442, at Apley, near the Maxell site. It is signposted for Wappenshall and the historic site is just under a mile along the lane.
