Müller Yoghurts and Desserts of Telford have joined Shropshire Wildlife Trust as silver corporate members.
A strong relationship formed between the organisations when Müller offered to turn a strip of grassland outside its factory into a wildflower meadow.
Müller Telford wanted to create butterfly habitat on its site at Donnington Wood and, with the help of local Trust volunteers, seeds were sown to make a flower-rich meadow. Hay was cut from nearby Muxton Marsh nature reserve and then strewn onto existing grassland at Müller’s factory. This is a successful technique used for increasing the diversity of wildflowers in fields.
Seed from common spotted orchid, meadow vetchling, bird’s-foot trefoil, eyebright and yellow rattle, species that flourish at Muxton Marsh, are now likely to germinate and grow, creating a beautiful meadow, ideal for butterflies, bees and other insects. It is hoped that the subtly marked but beautiful dingy skipper, a national rarity, will benefit from this additional habitat.
Shropshire Wildlife Trust has partnerships with over 60 businesses through its corporate membership scheme and the Meres & Mosses Business Environment Network.
