To raise money for this new venture, the students held a bake sale and launched their brand new product, ‘Vintage Theiyn Candles,’ in the foyer of the college’s Oswestry Campus.
The business name, ‘Theiyn,’ is derived from the Thai word meaning ‘light’ and was chosen as a mark of respect for one of the members of the group who is of Thai descent, the students thought it was important to celebrate what makes them unique. All members of the fledgling company dedicated their time and effort to the bake sale and company start-up, collecting teacups from various antique and charity shops and supporting a student bakery business that has been set-up as part of the programme, which made the cakes, along with the kind donation of cakes from one of the student’s grandmother.
Preparation was vital with the students priding themselves on creating an imaginative stall and arriving at 8am to capture the breakfast market. Business lecturer, Sarah Probert, commented “I am extremely proud of the business students effort and wanted to thank the staff and students at Walford and North Shropshire College for their support. If these students can show such dedication and hard work at the start of their learning journey I am really excited to see how far they will go!”
The money that has been raised from the bake sale will go towards the manufacturing of the ‘Vintage Theiyn Candle’ range and finalising product development. The students have chosen ‘Theiyn, the original handmade candle company’ as their slogan and were thrilled to receive their first advance orders, from the display of their prototype.
