North Shropshire College (NSC) has recently held its seventh annual Champions League Football Tournament at the Walford Campus.

Students from Sports Courses including the TNS Football Scholarship took part in the competition which was arranged by Dan Stevens, who is Head of Sport at NSC.
The knock-out event took part over two days and the tournament was refereed by Darren Speake. The finals were held on the last day of the tournament and the teams who were unsuccessful in the quarter finals went through to a separate Europa League Competition.
Dan Comments, “The overall winners of the Champions League Competition were Olympique Lyon, representing France who beat German side Bayern Munich 5-3 to win the title. The Europa League final saw Spanish side FC Barcelona make a last minute equaliser against English club Leicester City to take the tournament into extra time, where FC Barcelona took the win with the final score being 2-1.”
The event concluded with the NSC sports staff awarding Ballon D’or player of the tournament to FC Barcelona’s Dylan Hillier and the Goalkeeper of the championships to Bayern Munich’s Sam Fitchett-May. The Golden Boot (top scorer) went to FC Rostov’s Jack Haydon, who was only 4 goals shy of the 2013 competition record set by former student Naim Arsan, with a fantastic 14 goals.
Dan added, “This event is one of the highlights of the year for both staff and students within the Sports Department and always provides great entertainment over both days. We are already looking forward to holding the competition again in 2018.”
