Shropshire students receive A level results

Students from across Shropshire are today receiving their A level exam results in the hope they will make the grade to secure a place at their university of choice.

One Shropshire college celebrating an outstanding 99% pass rate for A levels is Walford and North Shropshire College were more than two thirds of passes are at the higher grades A* to C.

The 99% pass rate is well above the national benchmark and repeats the College’s performance in 2011. Out of 23 subjects offered, 21 achieved a full 100% pass rate.

Andrew Tyley, College Principal said he was impressed with the results and delighted to have repeated last year’s 99% pass rate, in what he describes as “one of the best years ever” for the College’s A level students: “Not only have we retained our excellent A level pass rate this year, but we have also seen more students achieving A and A* grades – which can be so important for students progressing to university. It is a great tribute to the talent and hard work of our students and a moment for all of us – students, parents and staff to feel rightly proud. There will be tears of joy for many of our students, who are now on course to achieve great things as they progress to university or employment”

The College’s AS results have also improved again this year, with a headline pass rate for AS subjects this year of 81%, with 10 out of 24 subjects achieving an excellent 100% pass rate.

Staff and students at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College are also celebrating, with more than a quarter of students gaining A*-A grades, over half gaining A*-B grades, and an outstanding overall pass rate of 99%, significantly above the national average.

As the largest A Level examination centre in Shropshire, the College’s 642 students took a total of 1,883 individual examinations in 45 different subjects.

Commenting on this year’s achievements, Principal Martin Ward, said: “With A Level results so important for students in terms of their progression to University or employment, it is fantastic to see even greater results across the whole College.

“Our 99% pass rate, with 78% of students achieving A*-C grades, is testament to the knowledge and expertise of all our staff and the supportive and nurturing relationship they have developed with students.

“Underlying the overall successes are some wonderful individual stories including a triple ‘gold’ success. Triplets Jeevan, Mohan and Naiyan Jones (formerly at Wakeman School) have all achieved A or A* in their A levels. Not only have the triplets achieved academic success but they have excelled across the curriculum and contributed hugely to the life of the College, including Jeevan’s role as a highly effective and inspirational President of the Student Council.

“We’d also like to offer special congratulations to our students who have been offered places at Oxbridge, including Oliver Russell (previously at Belvidere School), Oliver Lane (previously at Meole Brace), Owen Bray (previously at Oldbury Wells), Hannah Taylor-Lewis (previously at Priory School) and Jamie Mawhinney (previously at Church Stretton School) and wish them all every success for the future.”
