Claire Crackett, spokeswoman has announced that various civic dignitaries including the High Sheriff of Shropshire Robert Bland and his wife Tricia; Councillor Malcolm Smith and Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski will be attending the first service.
Claire Crackett, spokeswoman said: “To commemorate the precious lives lost in The Great War (later termed the First World War) the church will be hosting special services at 5pm on Wednesday evenings from 27 August to remember every single man and woman that made the ultimate sacrifice 100 years ago. We would like to invite everyone to come along and join in what promises to be a remembrance of lost lives and to pay their respects to Shropshire’s war dead.”
Claire continued: “We are producing a new Roll of Honour to ensure that all the names of people who died are recorded for posterity, and funds are being raised to create the new Roll of Honour and its’ new lectern and other prestigious matters that will reflect the great sacrifice made for King and Country.”
Father Mark Chadwick, Vicar at St Chad’s Church said: “We will be holding weekly prayers for the lives lost the week of their centenary in St Chad’s. This will enable families, friends and anyone who wishes, to reflect and remember the sacrifice made by the men and women of Shropshire.”
St Chad’s will display the new leather-bound Roll of Honour next to the original version which will be accessible to everyone. Soft bound copies of the Roll will be published and distributed around the county so that it is easily accessible to the people of Shropshire, visitors and researchers. Details will also be on a new dedicated website. This project is being run with the co-operation of Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives Service, and in association with the Royal British Legion.”
The Lord Lieutenant said: The task of completing the Roll of Honour of all those who lost their lives from the county is a most admirable way of helping to mark the anniversary of the First World War. It is important that our Roll of Honour should be as accurate as humanly possible. I very much hope that everyone will give this significant project their fullest possible support.”
