Barnardo’s awareness event at the Ironbridge Museum

Members of the public are invited to learn about Barnardo’s history and pioneering work with children, young people and their families at the event taking place in the Glass Classroom at the Ironbridge Museum, ‘birthplace of the Industrial Revolution’.

The event will include a talk from Alan Dearman, a former Barnardo’s resident, children’s services representatives from the Shropshire Project and a representative from local law firm QualitySolicitors Terry Jones who will explain how donations, especially those left in your will, could help our work in the future.

The event takes place on Tuesday 16th April at 10.30am for an 11am start followed by a complimentary buffet lunch and entry to the adjoining Enginuity Museum.

Spaces are limited and you can get in touch to reserve your seat by contacting Dylan Carroll on 0121 458 3618 or via email at dylan.carroll@barnardos.org.uk

Dylan said: “We are really looking forward to this event which will raise awareness of the fantastic work that Barnardo’s does in the local area and how people can get involved and help us to continue to carry out our valuable work.”

An example of how Barnardo’s is supporting children in Shropshire:

The Family Support Service at Barnardo’s Shropshire Project provides advice and support to children, young people and their parents or carers. The service encourages informed decision making for children and young people aged 5 to 18 years old; young people like Scarlett.

Scarlett’s mum and dad had been married for 10 years and she is the eldest of three children. The family were known to social services, as there was a history of domestic abuse between mum and dad and after a particularly violent episode, her mum decided to leave the house with the children and move out of the area.

Scarlett and her mum didn’t get on. Not only did the move impact on the family, mum has a personality disorder and struggles with depression. Mum also has a history of self harm and alcohol misuse and has been hospitalised on several occasions as a result. Despite Scarlett flourishing at school, she became verbally abusive to her mum; a trait which mum believes was copied from Scarlett’s dad.

Scarlett was referred to Barnardo’s. She spoke with her support worker Ann about the upheaval of the move and how she missed her dad. Scarlett said she felt isolated at the new home and didn’t have any friends.

Ann arranged for Scarlett to meet with her mum’s mental health worker, after which they completed a task using felts to draw the brick foundations of a person’s life. Scarlett talked about her mum’s childhood and began to think about how that impacted on her as a parent and her coping skills when things became difficult. This allowed Scarlett to realise how her behaviour impacts on others.

At a recent support session with Ann, mum said she has noticed a huge change in Scarlett’s attitude and how she now even writes her appointments on the calendar. Scarlett is making steps to restoring her relationship with her mum and being happier in herself.
