More than 80 sports and activities will be on offer across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin next week when the county’s first ever ‘Inclusive Sport and Activity Roadshow’ gets under way.

The week-long campaign, from September 19-25, celebrates opportunities to be active, regardless of people’s background, age or ability.

From rowing in Shrewsbury to boxing in Albrighton, tai chi in Coalbrookdale and judo in Market Drayton, there are activities running throughout the week for people of all ages and abilities.

Telford, Shrewsbury, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Much Wenlock, Church Stretton, Newport, Pontesbury, Broseley, Bishop’s Castle, and Shifnal are among the towns and villages taking part.

The roadshow is organised by the Inclusively Fit Project, in partnership with Energize, the county sports partnership for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, which believes there is an activity out there for everyone, whether they see themselves as ‘sporty’ or not.

Jessica Lightwood, Shropshire Inclusion Officer at Energize, said: “We’re delighted at the way so many clubs and community groups have got behind the concept of the roadshow, right across the county.

“Coming on the back of Team GB’s success at the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio, it is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of inclusive opportunities, and supporting members of our community to find an activity which is suitable for them.

“With such a fantastic response from local clubs and groups, we hope to make this roadshow an annual event in our calendar.”

Research shows that disabled people are currently half as likely to be active as non-disabled people – often because they do not find activities accessible, or struggle to find the information about local opportunities.

The West Midlands has the highest proportion of disabled people in the UK, which is why Energize and the area’s five other county sports partnerships are seeking to raise awareness of local accessible opportunities.
