Greenfields Primary School’s footballing girls were all smiles after holding their nerve to win a dramatic penalty shootout as they completed a hat-trick of Crossbar Cup triumphs.

The Greenfields hot shots maintained their domination of the popular annual five-a-side tournament, which featured ten primary schools from around the county, by beating Telford’s Redhill School in an exciting final at Telford College of Arts & Technology.

With the teams locked together at 2-2 after extra time, it came down to penalties, with Greenfields, from Shrewsbury, eventually winning on sudden death after both sides converted three of their five initial spot kicks.

Jamie Haynes, head coach for tournament organisers Crossbar Coaching Education in Sport, said: “It’s a good achievement for Greenfields to have won the girls event for three years in a row. Their boys team also won the Year 3/4 tournament a few weeks earlier, so they’ve taken lots of our silverware home with them.

“The sportsmanship throughout the day from all teams was fantastic and it was a great tournament. All the games were played in a really good spirit which added to the enjoyment. All the girls from the ten schools left with big smiles on their faces.”

The girls event was the third and final Crossbar Cup tournament of the year, with hundreds of Shropshire youngsters given the chance to represent their schools and face other teams from around the county.

The Plate final was an all-Telford affair as Old Park, from Malinslee, beat Lightmoor 1-0.
