A group of constituents staged a “craftivism” event outside Shrewsbury’s Conservative HQ yesterday, hoping to persuade MP Daniel Kawczynski to “Have A Heart” and reconsider his stance on Ukrainian refugees.

On Thursday, Mr Kawczynski claimed that “British left-wing parties” were making “illiterate and immoral” calls for the UK to take in more people.
The Shrewsbury and Atcham Conservative Association later said it had found the tweet “offensive” whilst senior Conservative MP Simon Hoare said Mr Kawczynski “did not speak for the Tory party”.
Hanging garlands of blue and yellow hearts outside the MP’s offices emblazoned with the message “Have A Heart”, organisers of Sunday’s event said they wanted to take positive action to show Mr Kawczynski that he did not speak for his constituents either.
Organisers said: “We hope that our MP will see these hearts and understand that the people of Shrewsbury and Atcham want to do whatever they can to help vulnerable people who are fleeing from the brutal war in Ukraine. We hope he will reflect on his words and actions and take a more compassionate approach. We can support countries close to Ukraine as well as welcoming refugees to the UK. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.
“While we were putting the hearts up, cars were stopping and people were leaning out of the windows saying what a lovely gesture it was and expressing their support for the Ukrainian people, who have astonished the world with their overwhelming bravery and courage in such difficult circumstances.”
Organisers will be posting hearts to Mr Kawczynski in the coming weeks, to keep the plight of Ukrainians at the forefront of his mind.
