Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed in the Abbey Foregate area of Shrewsbury on Tuesday.
The incident happened at around 9.45pm as the 53 year-old woman left a restaurant with a friend and began to walk towards the Abbey church.
The victim and her friend parted ways and the victim began to walk towards her car. As she did so, she felt a tug on her handbag.
The woman did not let go of her bag and was pulled onto a grassy area near the church by a man, injuring the back of her leg.
As she lay on the floor the man made off with her handbag and left in the direction of Abbey Lawns.
Officers recovered the handbag but cash had been taken from the victim’s purse.
The man is described as white, in his late teens to early twenties, approximately 5ft 10ins tall and of a slim build. At the time of the incident he was wearing knee length shorts, possibly grey in colour with a light grey zip-up jacket. He was also thought to be wearing trainers and a rucksack.
Detective Sergeant David Meyer, leading the investigation, said: “Our enquiries so far suggest that a number of people were in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident. I would appeal directly to these people to come forward and tell police what they saw as it could significantly progress our investigation.
“I would also like to thank those members of the public who have come forward already to speak to officers.
“This was an attack on a vulnerable woman and we are working hard to identify the person responsible.”
