Police officers are currently investigating several recent burglary offences whereby large quantities of family gold jewellery, predominantly owned by Asian families, have been stolen in the Telford area.
There have been three house burglaries in Arleston, Leegomery and Donnington between Saturday 28 May and Sunday 5 June 2016. Large amounts of family gold jewellery has been stolen. Most of the items had been passed down through generations of family and are of significant sentimental value.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “Whilst we continue to carry out thorough investigations into each of the offences, members of the public are urged to contact West Mercia Police on 101 if they notice anything suspicious or if they have been offered any suspicious jewellery for sale. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting their website.”
Officers are keen to advise residents of how they can take sensible precautions to avoid falling victim to gold burglaries:
Keep the jewellery in a safe place and locked up if possible. Consider installing a safe at home which is securely fixed to the floor or wall. Look for Home Office approved safes if you wish to keep items at home.
Ensure that the jewellery is insured
Consider storing high valuable items elsewhere such as in a bank deposit box; contact your bank for details.
Make a list of all jewellery stored in your house with a description of each item.
Photograph all pieces of jewellery against a plan background with the ruler next to them to give an idea of size.
Consider registering your jewellery with a registration company.
If you are buying jewellery as gift, don’t leave it or its packaging on display.
Install security lights on the outside of your property.
Keep receipts for any jewellery purchased, so these can be passed onto insurance companies if necessary.
