Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes (SSBB) has received a grant from Shropshire Community Fund, at the Shrewsbury offices of Shropshire RCC, to fund satellite navigation systems for its motorcycles.

The SSBB volunteer riders operate an emergency out-of-hours service where they can be tasked to deliver urgent medical items or life-saving medication to hospitals throughout the region.

Group chairman Chris Powdrill said: “We are delighted to receive this funding for the purchase of two waterproof SatNav units which will enable our riders to reach destinations more easily and help to maintain a tight delivery schedule.

“SSBB operates on a 24/7 basis all year round, is funded totally by charitable donations, run entirely by volunteers and all our riders hold Advanced Rider Motorcycle qualifications.”

Making the presentation was Julia Baron, chief executive of Shropshire Rural Communities Charity, who commented: “The Blood Bikes received a grant from the Shropshire Community Fund which is administered by the RCC on behalf of the Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group.

Funds are available as grants of up to £750 to help voluntary and community groups to start or develop their activities around health and wellbeing and any group in Shropshire is encouraged to apply.

The money can be used for any project that has a health related outcome such as healthy eating, exercise for sedentary people and self-help groups for people with long-term conditions.
