Over 2,000 to take part in Shrewsbury Half Marathon

Roads in and around Shrewsbury will be closed for a time today as over 2,000 people are expected to take part in this year’s Shrewsbury Half Marathon.

Thousands of supporters are expected to line the route and cheer the runners on, with the event starting at 9.30am.

The run starts and finishes at the Greenhous West Mid Showground, with runners heading through Shrewsbury town centre before taking in some of Shropshire’s countryside heading back to the finish taking in some of Shrewsbury’s iconic sights along the way.

Roads will be closed to traffic beforehand, for the set-up operation and will be reopened as the race progresses and when the last runners come through. The town centre is the first part of the 13.1 mile route allowing for roads to be reopened to normal traffic quickly.

The roads on the route which will be closed to traffic will include:

Berwick Road (B5067), Huffley Lane, Ellesmere Road (A528), Coton Hill, Castle Gates, Castle Street, St Marys Street, Dogpole, Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Longden Coleham, Kingsland Road, Kennedy Road, Ashton Road, Butler Road, Town Walls, Belmont, High Street, Shoplatch, Barker Street, Claremont Bank, The Quarry, Victoria Avenue, Smithfield Road, Chester Street and Coton Hill.

Those arriving by car are being reminded that all car parks are open as usual, with Abbey Forgate and Frankwell car parks the easiest ones to get to whilst the race is on.

The event is expected to be complete by around 12.30pm.
