A new theatre and chapel is being provided at Prestfelde Preparatory School in London Road, Shrewsbury.

Demolition of the old chapel, originally constructed in 1937, has just been completed and building work on the new scheme will now start.

“This is a very exciting development project for Prestfelde which will considerably enhance our facilities,” said bursar Simon Worthy.

“The new building will be a chapel-cum-theatre and will include a multi-functional hall, retractable seating for 280, a refurbished five-stop organ, a stage for performances and a contemplation area which will be also used as the ‘Green Room’ for performances.

“It will provide us with a very impressive facility, with the capacity to cater for a total of 350 people, which will boost drama within the school and be a great base for concerts, plays and numerous school functions, as well as chapel services and assemblies,” he said.

It is hoped that work on the new scheme, which is being financed by school funds and donations, will be finished by spring 2015, with a ‘buy-a-chair’ campaign being launched this autumn and an official opening held in the new year.

The design, planning and construction phases of the project are being carried out by Capital Construction Management of Shrewsbury.
