Runners set for Shrewsbury half marathon today

Shrewsbury Marathon

The event follows last year’s Shrewsbury Marathon which took place around the town centre.

Around 2,000 runners including shropshirelive.com’s Martin Childs are due to take part in the event which leaves the West Midland Showground at 10am.

The one lap route takes in four miles of countryside before runners head towards Shrewsbury town centre and back to the showground for the finishing line.

Last year the full marathon raised around £30,000 for charity.

Shrewsbury half marathon road closures
A rolling road closure will be in force during the half marathon. Roads will close 15 minutes before the first runner arrives and re-open 15 minutes after the last runner passes.

There will be rolling closures from 9.45am in the Ellesmere Road area to 1pm in Shrewsbury town centre.

The route will take in: Gravel Hill Lane, B5067 Berwick Rd, Crossgreen to Newton, Huffley Lane, A528 Ellesmere Rd, Coton Hill, Chester St, Castle Gates, Castle St, St Marys St, Dogpole, Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Coleham Head, Longden Coleham, Kingsland Rd, Kennedy Rd, Ashton Rd, Butler Rd, Kingsland Rd, Longden Coleham, Coleham Head, English Bridge, Beeches Lane, Town Walls, Belmont, Milk St, High St, Mardol Head, Shoplatch, Bellstone, Barker St, Lower Claremont Bank, Claremont Bank, St Chads Terrace, Murivance, Crescent Lane, Victoria Avenue(The Quarry), Victoria Avenue, Mardol Quay, Smithfield Rd, Chester St, Coton Hill, B5067 Berwick Rd and Gravel Hill Lane.
