Labour sees Dawley by-election landslide victory

The by-election was held following the death of Cllr Brian Duce late last year who represented Dawley Magna on both Telford & Wrekin and Great Dawley Parish councils.

Labour’s new Councillor Jane Pinter polled 957 votes – 57% – followed by 379 for the Conservatives and 312 for UKIP with the independent candidate trailing in fourth place.

Cllr Jane Pinter said:

“I am honoured to have been elected to serve the people of Dawley, Little Dawley and Aqueduct and I will do my best to represent the people who have put their trust in me. Brian Duce was a loyal and dedicated councillor who put the people of Dawley first and he will be a hard act to follow.

“Telford & Wrekin Council is having to deal with savage cuts in funding from central government and is doing so by working with local communities to deliver the best we can with less resources. This result shows that local people not only understand the cuts being imposed by central Government, but also support Telford & Wrekin Labour Council in how they are dealing with this attack on local government.”

In the election to Great Dawley Parish Council, Ian Campbell (Labour) was elected.

The turnout was 24.5 per cent

The balance of political groups among the 54 Telford & Wrekin councillors remains unchanged on: Labour (33), Conservative (17), Liberal Democrat (3) and Independent (1).
