They believe the 51-year-old man may have fallen from his bike after suffering a medical condition but are anxious to trace his movements prior to his death.
He was found shortly after 9.30pm last night beside the B4367 on the approach to Bucknell, close to the Shropshire/Herefordshire/Powys border.
Police have not ruled out the possibility he was involved in a collision but think he may have fallen or collapsed while riding his blue and white Ridgeback hybrid cycle.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: “We are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the cyclist last night. They will be able to help us establish his movements and the circumstances leading up to his death.
“We would ask anyone with information which might assist to contact Ludlow or Shrewsbury police stations by calling 101.”
It’s believed the man had been cycling along a back lane from Brampton Bryan towards Bucknell, joining the B4367 just outside Bucknell and then continuing towards the village. He was found about 100 yards from the junction.
He may previously have been in Leintwardine. The police spokesperson said: “The cyclist would have been fairly conspicuous at that time of night riding alone in a rural area.
“He was a large man, about 18 to 20 stone, with long black greying hair and wearing a red walker’s jacket and blue jeans.
A post mortem is being arranged to establish the cause of death.
