Budding writers and illustrators from a Shrewsbury school got a chance to show off their talents when the publishers of some of the country’s favourite children’s comics popped in to see them.

Pupils aged from three to seven from Prestfelde School took part in workshops run by a team of staff from Redan, who publish the children’s publication ‘Favourites’ and ‘Friends’ which feature Peppa Pig.

“We were delighted to welcome the editors of the magazines and their Peppa Pig toy, who was very popular amongst our little ones,” said Emma Thelwell, head of Little Prestfelde.

“After the pupils were introduced to the team, the children from nursery to year two worked in groups looking at the magazines and they talked about what they liked and what they would like to see in the publications.

“We encouraged the pupils to read the stories and the editors were impressed with our contribution to the workshops. We also looked at the toys in the magazines and learnt how they linked to the stories inside.”

The editors showed the school a film about the head office where they worked and described how the team all contributed different skills to produce the finished article.

Emma added: “It was very exciting – the film even showed the company’s giant printer in action.

“The staff from Redan seemed very interested in what our children thought about their publications and how they could use our ideas to develop their products even further.

“At the end of the day we all felt inspired to become artists, writers, editors and designers and one of our little boys even went home and made his own magazine complete with a toy on the front.”
