A leading Shropshire chartered surveyor has appointed two new members of staff at its offices in Much Wenlock – the town mayor and the youngest councillor to ever serve on the town council.

Madeleys Chartered Surveyors, based in the High Street, has announced the appointments of town mayor, Councillor Dan Thomas and town councillor, Councillor Daisy Whiteman.
The expansion is due to continued growth across the business including rural, commercial and agricultural portfolios and is a move which also meets the company’s ongoing commitment of supporting the community by recruiting locally.
It means a change of career for Dan who spent the last 10 years working in HR, latterly as HR director of a local care company. He has joined Madeleys as a trainee rural surveyor and will be studying for his masters through Harper Adams University.
Meanwhile Daisy takes up a role in client services and marketing and will be doing a marketing apprenticeship with Madeleys.
Madeleys is a highly respected and well-established firm that has been providing advice and consultancy to rural businesses and property owners in the agricultural sector for more than 30 years. The company covers a wide area and serves clients in Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, the West Midlands and Cheshire.
Paul Madeley, managing director and founder of Madeleys, said: “These are very exciting times for the company as we continue to grow as a business and have some big plans in the pipeline.
“We are delighted to welcome Dan and Daisy to the team. They are both local people and come from a farming background, so both have a good knowledge and understanding of the issues currently facing rural industries.
“They are also local councillors – Dan is the current Much Wenlock Mayor while Daisy is, at 18, the youngest councillor to ever serve on the town council.
“Their appointments highlights their commitment to serving the community, something we are also proud to do as a local business of long-standing, and makes them highly desirable candidates to help Madeleys progress and develop as we move forwards.
“It’s a big career change for Dan but he is relishing the challenge and is the ideal character to help Madeleys build on our reputation as he progresses along the path to becoming a fully qualified chartered surveyor.
“Daisy will be running our marketing. She is really organised and very keen and will be playing an integral role as we update our website and social media presence. We are also launching a podcast and, still being a teenager, Daisy brings a better understanding of today’s technological world to the business and how we can make the most of the available opportunities in those areas.”
Dan said: “This is a really big change for me, having spent the last 10 years in HR – first as a trainee consultant then right up to HR director of a local care company. HR was a career I fell into really, it was never something that I particularly wanted to do. Now I am a trainee rural surveyor and I’m loving it already.
“I feel very fortunate to be working at Madeleys, it’s a big name in the industry and it is great to have the opportunity to begin my new career with them. It is also a big plus for me to be working locally – not many people get the chance to do that.
“I’m a rural lad, growing up on a smallholding, so I am aware of the farming industry and the challenges it faces. I know the area well, have a lot of different experiences to draw on, including being mayor and a serving Shropshire County Councillor, and I believe I have a lot to offer my new job, Madeleys and the local community. I am also excited about doing my masters in rural surveying at Harper Adams.”
Daisy, who is also the treasurer of Much Wenlock Young Farmers, said: “I am delighted to get the job at Madeleys – such a trusted and respected firm in and around Much Wenlock and the wider area. It feels like a really exciting time to be joining the company.
“I have lived in Much Wenlock and been involved in the agricultural community all my life – I’m a farmer’s daughter so do have a pretty good understanding of rural affairs. This is helped I believe by me serving as a councillor on the town council.
“I wasn’t looking at going to university, wanting instead to do something more practical and develop a career that way. I am really looking forward to developing the marketing side at Madeleys and helping the business grow. Madeleys has some big plans and it’s great to be part of it.”
