When Patrick Smitheman heard that Cound Tennis Club needed a sponsor for their charity tournament, he came up with the match-winner.

Patrick, Managing Director of Harwood The Estate Agent of Broseley, together with his family, are enthusiastic supporters of community events in the picturesque village.

So when Patrick heard that the tennis club needed a tournament sponsor he was first to the net.

Fundraising from this year’s tournament will support Midlands Air Ambulance as well as the club’s flood defences.

Said club representative Sara Sartain: “The club, which has been holding this event for a number of years, is in an idyllic spot near Cound Brook, but has flooded very badly over the last couple of years.

“We are trying to raise funds to put in place some flood defences urgently and to support a local charity.

“Patrick and family are involved with community events in the village and very generously agreed to support this one.

“The event is very much a team effort and garners support from players from all over the area.”

She added: “We were blessed with fabulous weather and everyone enjoyed a great morning of tennis, as a result of which we raised just over £600.”

The tennis club, which is proud to have the only two working shale courts left in the county, is able to play all year round as the two shale and two hardcourts have floodlights.
