The benefits of biomass explained to farmers across the region

The demonstration event was held at Whiston Hall by Madeleys Chartered Surveyors and TGE Group, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of renewable energy systems.

More than 30 people attended the event on January 15, which was designed to help farmers understand what sort of financial returns are available on renewable energy installations, as well as removing some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the subject.

People were shown a working biomass boiler which had recently been installed at the farm and was now saving 62 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year , as well as providing heating for farm buildings and eight residential properties, including the 11-bedroom Whiston Hall.

Angela Cantrill, of Madeleys Chartered Surveyors, based in Much Wenlock, said: “It was a really successful event and everyone we spoke to said how useful it was to see a boiler in action.

“There are some good financial incentives available to use renewable energy, and part of our job is to help farms and rural businesses maximise the return from their assets. In this particular case, we advised the client to ensure this was the right project for his business.

“It’s great to see the boiler doing its job and providing heat for eight residential properties, as well as the farm buildings. The Renewable Heat Incentive will now pay back the cost of the installation over the next five to seven years with an income for the next 20 years.

“People were very impressed when we outlined the figures to them – if it’s done correctly, installing a renewable heat system does not need to be too good to be true.”
