New home secures future of Shropshire family farm

As well as providing a home, the conversion will help secure the future of the farm by allowing the second generation of the family to stay and help with the business instead of having to move away.

The farm, near Much Wenlock, is run by two brothers, with help from their family, who wanted to live as close as possible to make sure the farm kept going.

But trouble finding a property in the area threatened to derail their plans until they came up with the idea of converting the farm’s old milking parlour which had lain empty for 20 years.

Angela Roberts, of Much Wenlock-based Madeleys Chartered Surveyors, said: “Converting an old building is an increasingly popular way of getting your dream home in the right location now the property market is so challenging. This particular case is a lovely story and we were delighted to help the family get planning permission to make it happen.

“It’s important when undertaking a project like this to do your homework and submit a pre-application enquiry, which can make all the difference.

“We can help clients work through the whole process, from initiating an enquiry with Shropshire Council and preparing the planning application, to making sure planning conditions are met, dealing with building regulations and making a technical start on the development.

“In this case, planning permission was granted quite quickly because all the right information was submitted in the application, which was fantastic news for everyone.

“The family can now start living in their new home as soon as the building work is done and help the farm flourish.”
