Raja Mobeen Khan, 19, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday after admitting the charge in relation to nine-year-old Jayden Lee McIvor of Leegomery.
Jayden died on 2 February last year when the car driven by Khan was in collision with him on Haybridge Road, Hadley while crossing the road on a pelican crossing.
Police Constable Garry Moody, from West Mercia Police’s Operations Policing Unit, said: “The thoughts of everyone involved with this investigation remain with Jayden’s family.
“It was a particularly emotive and tragic case for all involved and resulted in an intensive investigation which took several months to complete.”
He said the tragic circumstances underlined the need for motorists to exercise absolute care and concentration at all times.
“The case sends out a strong reminder to all drivers, especially when in built-up areas, to keep to speed limits and to be ready to stop on an approach to a pedestrian crossing, regardless of what lights are showing at the time.
“Driving requires full concentration at all times and any lapse can have devastating results, as this case has shown.
“This collision – and the death of Jayden – could have been avoided had Mr Khan paid attention to the road ahead and prepared to stop his vehicle on the approach to a red traffic light.”
PC Moody said: “I would like to thank everyone who tried to help Jayden at the scene and all the witnesses who came forward to assist the police investigation. I would also like to thank the Crown Prosecution Service and all those who worked on the investigation, for their hard work.”
He added: “We also realise that this has been a difficult time for the family of Mr Khan and we wish to extend our sympathy to them too.”
