Speaking after the meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr Kawczynski said:

“I was part of a delegation of 4 Conservative MPs who met with the PM and his senior officials at No 10. Our meeting concluded after 40 minutes but discussions continued with his PPS and whips.

“I felt a strong need to explain to PM the concerns of Shrewsbury residents about the prospect of British Military intervention in Syria and named two senior members of my association who had encapsulated succinctly the strong fears of many other local residents who had approached me.

“Secondly I wanted to ask why leading members of Arab League such as Saudi, Qatar, UAE, Oman, and others were not able to take the lead to carry out precise military strikes on chemical installations instead of UK yet again having to do it.

“The wording of motion for today’s debate has been changed and therefore so has the nature of any vote.”

David Cameron has dropped plans for a Commons vote on backing British involvement.

Bowing to pressure after recalling Parliament, MPs will now debate military action in Syria in principle only.
