The incident happened at around 4pm yesterday outside Fiona’s Coffee Shop in the Watergate Arcade.
It began with an argument between two women accompanied by several young children. Two men associated with the women then became involved.
A fight broke out and a 26-year-old man was slashed with a bladed instrument, thought to be a knife.
He received wounds to his head and hand but declined hospital treatment. The other man ran off towards Watergate Street.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: “We are in the process of tracing a named suspect who is currently outstanding.
“This was a serious incident which would have been seen by a number of passers-by in the area at the time.
“We are grateful to those witnesses who have already come forward but it is important anyone else who saw any part of the incident, gets in touch with the police without delay.
“The arcade was busy at the time with people passing by, including a number of school children. Do call the police if you saw what happened.”
Witnesses should contact Detective Constable Jan Teggin at Market Drayton police station on 0300 333 3000.
