A local woman who has transformed support for people living with dementia across Shropshire has been awarded a Mayor’s Special Award for her outstanding contributions to the community.
Karen Corcoran, Operations Manager at Radfield Home Care Shrewsbury & Oswestry, was presented with the prestigious accolade by Councillor David Vasmer, Mayor of Shrewsbury, at a ceremony held at Shrewsbury Town Football Club on Wednesday, 14th May.
The award recognises Karen’s leadership in launching and expanding a Dementia Support Information Day, which started in 2023 with 30 local organisations and this year welcomed over 80 organisations to Theatre Severn. The event is now a key fixture in Shropshire’s Dementia Action Week calendar, providing information and support to hundreds of local residents.
Speaking after receiving the award, Karen said:
“I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition. It reflects not just my work, but the passion and dedication of our whole team and the amazing community partners we work with.”
Karen joined Radfield Home Care in 2021, following a 35-year career in retail and customer service. Since then, she has guided the organisation’s team of Care Professionals to deliver award-winning care across Shrewsbury and Oswestry, while forging meaningful partnerships with charities, health services, and local authorities to improve support for people with dementia, hearing loss and sight loss.
The Mayor’s Special Award is presented each year to individuals and groups who have made a significant impact on the town and its people. Karen was one of a select group personally chosen by the Mayor for her work in public service and community engagement.
