Dr Alasdair Campbell, who joined Prestfelde School in 1983, was the first teacher to introduce pupils there to computers, giving lessons to youngsters in how to use BBC machines.
He rose to be director of studies at the London Road school, as well as head of IT.
“We are all very sad to see Dr Campbell step down after 30 years of service but hope he enjoys a much-deserved retirement,” said Prestfelde headmaster Mark Groome.
“We salute him and thank him for doing such a superb job in a variety of roles and as such an outstanding and much-loved teacher. Dr Campbell has been a superb example to both teachers and pupils alike and a valuable colleague – he will be sorely missed,” he added.
Dr Campbell, who moved to Shropshire from South Africa in 1981 and has a doctorate in educational management, said that Prestfelde had been a delightful place to work and he would miss seeing his pupils develop and progress throughout their time there.
Amongst his other contributions to the school, he ran the chess club, worked as the sound man and as part of the technical team on numerous school productions and even played the bagpipes, piping in the Christmas pudding at festive lunches.
He lives in Shrewsbury with his wife Trish and has one daughter Claire who is also a teacher.
