Cosford railway station reopens after £2.1m upgrade

Opening five weeks later than planned, contractors working at the station on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line suffered a number of setbacks during the refurbishment. The original reopening was due in late March.

One of the biggest delays to the project was encountered whilst trying to pile drive supports into the ground which will hold the new glass reinforced polymer platforms.

Work on the redevelopment of the station began in November and involved removing the existing waiting shelters, lighting and fences, demolishing the timber platforms and support structures and the access stairs leading to them.

The new station has platforms constructed from glass reinforced polymer laid on concrete cross beams and steel supports. The platforms have a non-slip surface and include tactile paving to denote the platform edge. New fencing has also been erected along the rear of the platforms.

Each platform has steel and glass waiting shelters and lighting columns, and the customer information screens and station announcement system will be re-reinstated. There will also be new steel staircases giving access to the platforms.

The previous station was opened on 1937 to coincide with the opening of RAF Cosford.
