Strong winds disrupt train services in Shropshire

Arriva Trains Wales

Poor rail conditions and high winds caused disruption to the Arriva Trains Wales network.

Users of the Church Stretton to Shrewsbury line were delayed after a train collided with a fallen tree. Alternative transport was sent to the scene to transfer the passengers.

In the Shrewsbury area some lines closed for a time. Network Rail say that services may be delayed by up to 80 minutes.

Commuters travelling between Wrexham and Shrewsbury are currently facing delays of up to 50 minutes because of a tree on the line at Ruabon.

Passengers were being urged not to travel between: Cardiff – Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury – Birmingham, Shrewsbury – Chester and Shrewsbury – Crewe/Manchester.

Strong Winds Sweep Across the UK
Strong winds have been battering the UK through the morning.

A lorry driver was killed when the HGV he was driving was blown on top of two cars on the A801 near Bathgate, West Lothian, four others were injured in the accident.

The Thames Barrier will be closed from 10pm to protect London from a combined tidal surge and high tide in the Thames estuary.

Elsewhere, homes in Norfolk and Essex are being evacuated after officials warned the lives of people in the region could be at risk from the worst coastal tidal surge for more than 60 years.

Prime Minister David Cameron said a meeting of the Government’s Cobra emergency response committee had been called to discuss how to combat the extreme conditions.
