Alongside working to secure a direct rail link to the capital from Shrewsbury, the town’s MP has long called on Arriva Trains Wales and Network Rail to improve Shrewsbury station and its surrounding facilities.

Daniel Kawczynski said: “The importance of rail services for Shrewsbury cannot be overstated. This is why I have lobbied the Government for a service to run direct from Shrewsbury to London and continue to work with the Secretary of State and Virgin to ensure this service begins by the published start date of December 2013.

“In addition, I have long highlighted constituents concerns about the dilapidated state of parts of Shrewsbury station and its lack of services, adequate lighting and security. I am very pleased therefore that Arriva trains Wales have announced this funding for much needed station improvements. I look forward to seeing how these improvements will take shape and would like to ensure Arriva have them completed in time for passengers to enjoy when using the new service to London at the end of this year.”

A spokeswoman for Arriva Trains Wales said: “The improvements planned at Shrewsbury Station involve the switching over of the existing waiting room and customer information office on platform 4/7.

“This will result in a larger waiting room area and a more prominent location for staff to provide customer service.”

She added: “There is unlikely to be any disruption to train services while this improvement work takes place, however we will endeavour to reduce any inconvenience to passengers as a result of works being carried out at the station.”
