The service was suspended at evenings and weekends following a shortage of skilled and experienced staff.
On Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Monday when the Minor Injury Unit will not be open, St John Ambulance will provide a first aid service at the Whitchurch Community Hospital site between 9am and 5pm. The Community Hospital Minor Injury Unit will open again with its weekday service from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 2 April.
Glen Curry, Regional Events Manager from St John Ambulance, said:
“St John Ambulance will be providing a first aid service during the out of hours periods, which will not be like-for-like with the Minor Injury Unit Service but will provide support at key times when the Minor Injury unit service is temporarily suspended.
“We have a team of highly-trained first aiders who will be volunteering their services during the Easter weekend, ensuring that first aid is available to anyone who needs it. We are always pleased to work in partnership with other agencies, and we provided a minor injury treatment unit in Shrewsbury during the festive period in conjunction with Shropshire’s Safer Stronger Communities Partnership. We aim to provide vital support to the NHS in Whitchurch at this time to ensure that no one suffers from a lack of first aid, and that people are then signposted on to other NHS services such as, GPs or A&E as required.”
St John Ambulance will provide first aid help when they are at the hospital site over the Easter weekend but otherwise, when the Minor Injury Unit is closed patients should call Shropdoc on 08444 068888 for the best advice when it’s not a life-threatening or serious injury.
Anyone who has chest pains, difficulty breathing or faces a life-threatening situation should call for an ambulance on 999.
