Shropshire Council seek Olympic Torch Relay volunteers


Shropshire Council is on the lookout for volunteer stewards to give around four hours to help make the day safe and enjoyable for the Torchbearers and for those welcoming the Flame.

Around 500 volunteers will be needed over the two days to provide information and directions to visitors, ensure the route and the surrounding areas are clean and tidy, and manage crowds and traffic.

The Flame will travel through the communities of Ludlow, Clee Hill and Cleobury Mortimer on Thursday 24 May and Oswestry, Pant, Llanymynech, Shrewsbury, Cressage, Much Wenlock, Benthall, Broseley, Ironbridge, Telford and Newport on Wednesday 30 May 2012.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said: “We need lots of volunteer stewards to help us manage this fantastic event so your help will be greatly appreciated.

“As we’ve said before, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity which I’m sure many will want to be part of.”

People interested in volunteering must be 16 or over and will to need apply by 30 April 2012. Full training will be provided.

The 70 Day Olympic Torch Relay
The 70 day Olympic Torch Relay will start at Land’s End, Cornwall, on the morning of 19 May 2012. On leaving Land’s End, the Olympic Flame will travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK, giving thousands of communities and individuals their moment to shine.

On the final day of the Olympic Torch Relay, it is LOCOG’s intention that the Olympic Flame will travel down the River Thames as it makes its way to the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
