Coffee mornings to promote companionship support for older people living at home

People interested in providing companionship support to help transform the lives of older people living in the community are being invited to coffee mornings in Shrewsbury to find out more information about the role.

Shropshire home care boss Rachael Birchall is on a mission to highlight the importance of companionship in the care of older people.

She is promoting care as a rewarding career and is hoping to reach people who naturally gravitate towards voluntary work and who may never have thought of working in care before.

“Companionship provides a life-line and friendship to vulnerable people, bringing happiness and interest back into their lives,” said Rachael, who cared for her grandmother before launching her company Home Instead Senior Care Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Oswestry, over two years ago.

“Companionship is a big part of what we do and it’s an area that would suit many people who might otherwise be attracted to voluntary work. It’s enriching and brings personal fulfillment.

“Our caregivers take older people shopping and on social visits, on trips to the seaside or on countryide walks. They spend proper time with clients.

“Companionship gives hope, a bit of happiness and breaks the loneliness. Older people can often live alone. Companionship gives them something to look forward to. It is known that people with dementia remember their feelings, so if they have a happy experience it stays with them.”

Rachael will be holding the coffee mornings, between 11am and 1pm, at the Trinity Centre, Church Road, Meole Brace, on Tuesday November 10 and The Gateway centre, Chester Street, on Friday November 13.
