Stay Telford provides housing and support services for 250 young people and families each year, who through no fault of their own, find themselves without shelter or support.

The highlight of the fundraising week will be ‘The Wrekin Stay’ – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local people to spend the night on the summit of the iconic Shropshire landmark.

Organisers will be setting up base camp overnight on Saturday 25th May. A number of activities have also been arranged including guided walks, a Sherpa challenge, a night walk and a range of family activities. Special vehicles will be provided for people with disabilities to be taken to the top of the Wrekin.

Campers will be charged £10 for each adult with free admission for children.

Another key event of the Action Week will be a Firewalk on the evening of Monday 20th May to be staged at the Park Inn, Telford. Participants will be encouraged to raise sponsorship funds by walking across hot coals.

The charity will also be organising fundraising events in the areas where Stay has its supported housing schemes – Ketley, Oakengates, Madeley and Dawley. The programme will include a car wash, supermarket bag pack; and tea and cake sale.

John Green, Director of Stay, is also making his own contribution by completing an Elements Challenge comprising a sky dive, the firewalk and an ice bath. Explaining the decision to stage the Action Week, he said:

‘We have been supporting homeless young people in the area for 22 years. Many people have a stereo-typical image of what a homeless young person looks like and why they may have become homeless. Generally speaking, this will be wide of the mark.

‘Young people become homeless because of the breakdown of relationships with family, partners or friends; because of eviction caused by rent arrears or because of domestic violence or abuse.

‘We want to engage the local community to help us raise as much money as possible. The Action Week will provide a great launch platform for our fundraising and will ensure people will have some fun along the way too. The Wrekin Stay event has already generated a lot of interest.’
