National Trust offers weather-proof suggestions of places to visit in Shropshire

“Everyone reacts differently to wet weather,” says Beccy Speight, Regional Director for the National Trust in the Midlands. “Some people want to avoid the rain completely in which case they should head for our historic houses, like Attingham Park, Benthall Hall, Dudmaston Estate or Sunnycroft. Others are prepared to dodge the showers so can stroll through the beautiful gardens and parkland too. And some like nothing better than a muddy walk splashing through puddles, so our countryside sites like Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills are perfect.”

The National Trust is offering suggestions for every preference, come rain or shine, with advice and guidance at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/midlands. Here are some of our favourite places to enjoy in Shropshire depending on how you react to wet weather:

For shelter-seekers…
Attingham Park – Find out how the historic mansion is being brought back to life by a phased programme of restoration. See the conserved Boudoir, vibrantly decorated Octagon Room and the impressive Dining Room set for dinner. There’s also the atmospheric Butler’s Pantry and new shop to enjoy.

Benthall Hall – Discover a stunning interior and stories galore at this important house which has been involved in many historical events ranging from the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution.

Dudmaston Estate – Explore this fascinating house, full of collections from the intriguing modern art galleries assembled by diplomat Sir George Labouchere, to the classical collections of botanical drawings and watercolours put together by his wife Lady Rachel.

Sunnycroft – This Victorian Gentleman’s villa is a time capsule full of fascinating items from a bygone era. New for this year is an exhibition celebrating former owner Joan Mander’s involvement in helping to embroider the Queen’s Coronation robe.

For shower-dodgers…
When the rain clouds disappear – or you’re happy to venture out in your waterproofs or with a brolly – head outdoors at Attingham Park, Benthall Hall, Dudmaston Estate and Sunnycroft to explore the beautiful grounds.

For welly-wearers…
Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills – Pull on your waterproofs and head for the hills. The Long Mynd and Wenlock Edge are perfect places for splashing around in the rain and mud when the weather is wet.
