Staff from a Shropshire building company have been presented with a trophy as champion charity fund raisers.
The cup has been handed over to Galliers Homes of Shrewsbury from Macmillan Cancer Support, who organise the annual coracle world championship race in Shrewsbury.
Employees from Galliers competed in this autumn’s race on the River Severn and donated a total of £3,269 in sponsorship – more money than any other of the 40 teams.
The event, which raised a grand total of over £40,000 for the charity, involved crews of four paddling in coracles across the River Severn and back, watched by spectators
“We really enjoyed the event and entered three teams this year. Although we were not crowned as world champions and it was great to be presented with the trophy as the top fund raisers,” said Craig White, a senior quantity surveyor for Galliers Homes, which is building a range of developments in the county, including one at Belvidere Park in Shrewsbury.
“It was an ideal opportunity for us to have some fun and collect money for such a good cause and we hope to take part next year.”
Helen Knight, regional fund raising manager for Macmillan, said that it was a fantastic effort by the company. She commented: “For the second year running Galliers have been the top fundraisers at the coracle championships.
“The company is supportive of this event and it gave me great pleasure to hand over to them the Richard Bayliss Cup for the most amount collected.
“The event will have raised over £40,000 this year for Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire. This amount of money can make a real impact into future cancer services in the county so a big thank you to everyone at Galliers who have supported Macmillan once again this year.”
