Shrewsbury’s brand new internet café, Go-To, is the venue for the first of a series of one-day IT and social media courses, designed to get individuals and local businesses alike up and running in this ever-increasing area of communication.

The courses, held 10am-4pm every Wednesday, from 18th November up until Christmas, are offered on a first come, first served basis to small groups of eight attendees.

The first course – ‘Introduction to Social Media – is designed as a taster session for those who have yet to experience the wide range of choices out there. ‘Build a Website in a Day’ is to take place the following week, and will guide the novice into creating an impressive online presence, as quickly and as easily as possible. ‘Twitter for Business’, scheduled for Wednesday 2nd December, explains how the app has been increasingly used to successfully promote businesses – locally, nationally and internationally. ‘Search Engine Optimisation’, on 9th December, covers the mysterious art of getting your website to the top of Google; while the final course of 2015, simply entitled ‘Facebook’, will empower attendees to successfully create profiles, with a slant towards exploitation of this powerful tool for businesses. All courses can be booked online by visiting www.go-to-internet.com/courses.

Course leader Kaz Burgoyne is a qualified ICT teacher and team leader/assessor for two exam boards, as well as a communications professional for many years in various industries including motor racing, automotive, retail, local government, polymers and chemicals. She is currently chairman/website designer for Shrewsbury River Festival, and social media/webmaster for Shrewsbury Business Chamber.

Go-To internet café is based at the registered charity Roy Fletcher Centre, Cross Hill. Officially opened by Mayor of Shrewsbury Miles Kenny on 1st October 2015, the facility offers drop-in sessions with volunteers on Mondays and Thursdays for only £1/hour.

“I’m pleased that our new Go-To internet café will be offering IT courses on social media, so soon after opening,” said Jonathan Brown, Chief Executive of the Roy Fletcher Centre. “We already offer help with such things as using new tablets and laptops, setting up e-mail addresses, computer basics, internet access, online social housing application, job searches and updating/uploading CVs: we’re planning a very busy diary for 2016!”
