Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury took on Lucy Sutton and Laura Pitcher as part of a training agreement with Telford College of Arts and Technology, in Wellington.

And since they joined the company, the girls have surpassed all expectations and are well on their way to a strong future in the industry.

Director Mark Freeman said: “We have been extremely impressed with both Lucy and Laura, and their progress so far has been nothing short of amazing.

“They are working towards their NVQ level 2 in business administration as part of their apprenticeships, while getting to grips with a completely new hi-tech computer system we’ve just installed, so their first few months with us have certainly been hectic. Ultimately both girls will be working towards becoming brokers when they have obtained the necessary qualifications, which is a great target to aim for.

“Lucy and Laura have excelled in all the tasks they’ve been set – so much so, that we are now confident enough in their abilities to make them part of our personal lines team quoting real customers for household and motor insurance policies.

“Thanks to the support we’ve had from Telford College, and the calibre of the apprentices we’ve welcomed so far, we’re now actively recruiting another candidate to become part of the Henshalls family.”

Lucy said being part of a busy team and receiving one-to-one training was helping her to take a more hands-on approach to her role. “I am also enjoying helping other members of staff with any queries they may have with the new computer system, and can see there are a lot of opportunities for a positive career path with Henshalls.”

Laura said she particularly enjoyed working in the personal lines team as it gave her the chance to deal directly with members of the public, and she would eventually like to learn more about commercial insurance too. “I think insurance really is the job for me, because everyone is constantly learning new things every day, and although most people don’t think it, insurance is actually quite interesting!”

Hayley Corbett, Apprenticeship Manager at Telford College, said: “We’re delighted to have formed such a strong and positive partnership with Henshalls, and we’re very proud of the success that both Lucy and Laura have achieved so far.”
