Toni & Guy in Castle Street, Shrewsbury, has vacancies for a number of young people to join its highly-regarded training programme.

Gavin Pulham, proprietor of the salon, said that many similar businesses were currently contracting, not expanding.

“Anxiety over the economy is definitely affecting some sectors of the hairdressing sector but we are pleased to say that our shop is thriving,” he explained.

“We have a team of experienced stylists and colourists and now require at least two more apprentices to complete our team.

“We are an excellent place to work, with the Toni & Guy ‘Varder’ training being recognised and revered globally.

“Our salon alone has trained around 60 apprentices since opening 19 years ago and more than 20 of them are now working in the area, nine owning their own businesses in Shrewsbury, so this is a great place to start your career as we always aim to ensure that new generations of creative stylists ascend through the ranks.

“It is great to see local young people develop from apprentices into highly skilled professional hairdressers,” Gavin said.

All the salon’s trainees spend two and a half years with qualified staff in the salon learning Toni & Guy hairdressing techniques and NVQ skills to Level III.

Throughout this time they are regularly sent to one of the group’s academies for assessment. Once their NVQ is successfully completed and management feel that students are ready they attend the Manchester or London Academy for six weeks of final intensive training and testing.
