Shrewsbury Golf Club is starting a new Academy to attract local children to try play golf.
The Academy gives children of all ages the opportunity to try playing the game and provides them with expert tuition from the Club’s professional John Richards, assistant professional, Josh Charnock and trainee professional Simon Davies. The academy begins in April and is sponsored by Greenhous Volvo in Shrewsbury.
Golf is growing in popularity amongst young people. Shrewsbury Golf Club is keen to dispel the perception that golf is a sport for older people. It has created an academy to encourage children to try the sport and learn to play. Shrewsbury Golf Club has a growing Junior section and Junior Organiser, Richard Beason wants to give more children the opportunity to get into golf.
“Golf is a fun game requiring good hand eye co-ordination. There is great satisfaction in blasting a golf ball skyward. Our academy will also provide an opportunity to make friends and play in competitions,” said Richard.
The Academy will also provide an opportunity to develop the skills to play golf competitively and play in national competitions. Junior Captain, Joe Sherratt and Junior Vice Captain, Larissa Jones will be building a junior team to play a number of other clubs in a national league this summer.
“The competition is played across a number of different courses, initially at Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth and Patshull Park. We are hoping that some of the young people who attend the academy may want to play competitively, develop their skills with help from the professional coaches, and get selected for the team,” said Joe.
“I’m also hoping that a number of girls come to the academy, so we have a team with several girls in it,” said Larissa.
The academy is being sponsored by local business Greenhous Volvo in Shrewsbury. Steve Rowson, General Manager of Greenhous Volvo said:
“I’m delighted to be sponsoring the academy. I hope local children will come and discover how fun golf can be, make new friends and get to play competitively. We may also discover naturally talented young people who go on to make a career from the game.”
The Academy runs on a Friday afternoon after school at 4:30pm. It begins on Friday 17th April. Children wanting to join the Academy should contact Shrewsbury Golf Club on 01743 872977 and select option 1 or email john@johnrichardsgolf.co.uk
