The unit will be for children who need to stay in hospital overnight and will include a new children’s cancer and haematology unit. It will also be for women who need a consultant-led delivery and gynaecological and head and neck services which require an overnight stay.

Chris Needham, Associate Director – Estates and Facilities Management and technical lead for the reconfiguration project, said:

“We are delighted to have submitted our planning application for what we believe will be a fantastic 21st century healthcare facility for the people of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and mid Wales. Our aim has been to develop plans that best meet the needs and expectations of patients and their families, the clinicians who provide these services, while also making the best use of resources available to us.“

Meanwhile the Trust is continuing to develop its Full Business Case for the reconfiguration of hospital services programme, which will be submitted to the relevant health boards in the coming weeks. If both the planning application and the Full Business Case are approved then work will start on the unit in summer 2012, with an expected opening date of summer 2014.
