Veolia begins Shrewsbury incinerator planning decision appeal

Veolia Environmental Services say the energy from waste facility, which was turned down by planners last year, would make a major contribution towards the delivery of ambitious targets to recover value from waste in Shropshire.

The inquiry will take place at the Shirehall in Shrewsbury.

If the appeal is successful the facility would generate electricity, and supply power equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 10,000 homes, from 90,000 tonnes of residual waste generated in Shropshire. The electric would be supplied to the electricity distribution network, replacing electricity generated using valuable fossil fuels.

Shropshire Council’s planning committee rejected the plans on 1 September 2010 saying it was unacceptable to have an incinerator that had not been included in the local waste plan. The cabinet also felt the facility would have a negative impact on the visual landscape with incinerator next to a historically significant site.

Campaigners against the energy waste facility which includes Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth are concerned about possible health risks if the development was allowed at Battlefield.

An Environmental permit to operate the facility was granted by the Environment Agency on 22 June 2010.
