Nephew wins Dave Pearson 36 Hole Open Scratch Salver

The nephew of a former Captain at Bridgnorth Golf Club has won the memorial Dave Pearson 36 Hole Open Scratch Salver.

Dave Pearson was very well known in golfing circles, as he was Captain of Bridgnorth Golf Club in 1985 and again in 2016, he was President of the Shropshire and Herefordshire Union of Golf Association in 2005-06 and President of Bridgnorth Golf Club in 2019-21.

In his last year as President, David decided to put up the Dave Pearson 36 Hole Open Scratch Salver to be played for annually. Sadly, Dave lost his long battle against cancer in May, so this year it became a memorial event, which attracted 36 low handicap players from all over the county to compete for this coveted prize.

The course was in fantastic condition, but the weather conditions were not good for golf, with strong winds in the morning round and heavy rain during the afternoon.

Craig Simmons from Shifnal Golf Club and Glyn McKenna from Bridgnorth Golf Club managed to break par on their morning round, but the best scores of the afternoon session were 2 over par.

Results

Richard Pearson came home with gross 73 & 75 to clinch the silverware by 2 shots from Craig Simmons 72 & 78 and 3 shots from Glyn McKenna 72 & 79.

After the game, Richard said: “Well, it’s been a tough year losing my Uncle Dave to his battle with Cancer, also coming back from a broken leg has been tough on my golf but knowing how much this meant to me, I practised day and night the week leading up to the event.

“The morning round was tough due to strong winds. I needed to make sure I gave myself a chance for the afternoon round. Which I successfully did, going into the afternoon round one shot behind the leaders, Craig Simmons and Glynn Mekenna. The wind stopped, but the rain started, and it continued all afternoon.

“Playing alongside Glyn, made me realise I was soon in a match and after birdie at the first, I levelled everything up. The rain continued and going in on the back nine I took the lead and managed to hold on to it to the finish.”
