“We took Sandi to see the tennis facilities at Ellesmere College’s indoor centre where we met Stephen Welti, the senior performance coach.

“He told us what Ellesmere are doing in terms of their tennis academy and how they are encouraging children to play.

“We then went to Wem Tennis Club to meet committee members Pete Hughes and Mark Wilson.

“Wem were named Shropshire club of the year in the LTA Tennis Awards in 2022, with Pete also winning the volunteer of the year award.

“It was associated with the upgrade of Wem’s facilities, so it was nice to take Sandi there.”

The LTA president’s time in Shropshire also saw Sandi officially open the Cathie Sabin Community Tennis Centre in Shrewsbury.
