Shropshire County Cricket Club is delighted to be strengthening its links with Wrekin College.
The independent co-educational boarding and day school in Wellington has become the home of Shropshire’s Academy side by making its excellent facilities available to host the team’s matches.
Having staged Shropshire’s successful annual hospitality day – a popular event regularly attended by around 700 guests from the county’s business community – for many years, Wrekin College was also the venue for a first team match last May when the county beat Herefordshire in two Twenty20 encounters.
As part of the growing relationship, Wrekin College has thrown its support behind Shropshire CCC by agreeing a two-year deal to sponsor the Academy team’s playing kit.
Ian Roe, Shropshire’s Academy coach, said: “We always love to play our cricket at Wrekin College. It’s become part of Shropshire cricket’s home now, especially for our up and coming players within the Academy.
“Our first team play fixtures at grounds around the county, but we have also enjoyed playing some first team cricket at Wrekin.
“To now have the support of Wrekin College with our Academy just further strengthens the relationship, while we must also thank Hawk Cricket, our clothing suppliers, for providing us with our bespoke team wear.”
He added: “Hopefully it’s a partnership that will now continue to grow moving forward.
“Our Academy team’s home matches are played at Wrekin College throughout the summer, with the squad’s winter training sessions to be held in the indoor centre at Wrekin College in the new year before moving outdoors in early April in readiness for the 2020 campaign.”
Jonathan Mather, director of cricket at Wrekin College, welcomes the growing relationship with Shropshire CCC and stressed the importance of cricket to the school.
He said: “Here at Wrekin, we are very proud to act as the home of cricket, in its playing, its training and its administration.
“Our most talented students, boys and girls, can tangibly see the pathway through to semi-professional and professional cricket.
“We have an opportunity here for cricketers to play on a top-class strip courtesy of Tony Parton and the facilities that we continue to develop.”
