Bridgnorth martial artist Gary Plant has trained two students to a world championship gold medal win.

Gary, 43 is a fourth degree black belt and has owned Bridgnorth Tae Kwon-Do, based at Oldbury Wells School, since 2012. Holding lessons twice a week all year round, and demanding a consistently and increasingly high standard, Plant sets his expectations high for his students.

This has paid off in the form of a multitude of medals for Marcin Makarewicz and David Rowley. Marcin, a blue belt, won gold for his individual sparring event at the world championships which were held in Scotland last week. He also scooped a silver for the team sparring event, alongside comrades from other associated clubs from around the country (the GTI Squad).

Meanwhile, David Rowley won a trio of medals, bringing home silver and bronze for his individual events (patterns and sparring respectively) and a gold for the black belt team sparring event. Rowley has seen international gold medal success previously under Plant’s instruction and Makarewicz is Plant’s sixth student to win a world championship medal. Incredibly he is the fourth student to achieve a gold world championship medal under Plant’s tuition.

Plant said: “The results are fantastic and hard earned. David and Marcin have both put in the hours training. My focus for the club is now on the December grading for colour belts and Spring grading for my black belts.”
