Champagne Breakfast competition was started in 1990 to celebrate the opening of the Dining Room extension. This year  Nick & Jane Cook, organised the competition for the 3rd year running and did a first-class job and with a little light pressure agreed to organise it next year.

After the first class breakfast and copious amounts of bubbly, Nick Cook told four jokes, which is a longstanding custom at this event. Nick then read out the prize winners.

The winners were John Durham & Lucy Lawrence. John gave the winners speech and said that the day turned out to be a very special day at Bridgnorth Golf Club, as it was the first time he had played with his golfing partner Lucy Lawrence. I believe it was a very popular win, by the sound of the cheers we received when it was announced we had won it. A lovely day, fantastic weather, the course playing at its best and the Champagne Breakfast well organised and attended as always. A really emotional day for me and especially for Lucy Lawrence, as Lucy and Margaret Fretwell were good friends.

After the emotion of winning had calmed, John also said: “I joined Bridgnorth Golf Club three years ago and I have been made so welcome at the club by all members and staff. They are a very special bunch of people, and one of the friendliest clubs in the region. So I put my name down to be a committee member last year, just to give something back, I serve on two committees now and thoroughly enjoy it.”

The Champagne Breakfast always heralds the start of the monthly winter social golfing competitions, which help to give Bridgnorth Golf Club its reputation as the friendliest golf club in Shropshire.

Eight pairs were awarded prizes with the best score also winning the Fretwell Trophy, which was presented in 2002 by Margaret in memory of Colin Fretwell, who had been an avid supporter of the Champagne Breakfast.
