Shropshire over 50s in first win of the season

Ian Walker hit an unbeaten 96 against Herefordshire to help steer Shropshire Over 50s to their first win of this season’s campaign.

He followed up his unbeaten 98 in the previous game with another fine innings to help steer Shropshire to their target of 217 for the loss of just three wickets with nearly eight overs to spare.

He was ably supported by opener Ed Home who hit 55 and Graham Trow who chipped in with 26 at Shifnal.

Earlier Walker had also chipped in with the ball taking 3-42 along with Chris Hodson who took 2-45 as Herefordshire were restricted to 213-7.

Shropshire’s Over 60s completed the group stages of their campaign unbeaten after defeating Leicestershire in their final game with Peter Hayes hitting an unbeaten century.

It means they now go forward to the second group phase with fixtures against Yorkshire, Norfolk, Lancashire, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire aiming to qualify for the national final for the second time in three years.

Skipper Tym Fern won the toss at Sentinel and after an early setback, Dave Street and Alan Denver put on 72 for the second wicket before the former was out for 40 off just 36 balls.

Hayes then joined Denver in a partnership of 82 before the Wellington man was caught just after reaching his half century.

But Hayes continued his progress to finish on 116 not out from 109 balls as Shropshire finished their 45 overs on 248-6.

Opening bowlers Andy Parkyn and Dave Ashlin then got to work with the ball, keeping things tight as the wickets started to tumble.

Ashlin finished with an impressive 3-6 from his nine overs, and with the visitors on 28-4 the game was over as a contest. Leicestershire eventually finished on 107-9 with Tim Cotton picking up two wickets and a run out.

Shropshire Over 60s 2nd XI have also qualified for the second group phase of their competition, despite losing their final group game against their nearest rivals Yorkshire.

Bonus points proved vital as Shropshire lost the toss at Whitchurch and were put into bat with rain threatening, and they were soon in trouble as wickets began to tumble.

Skipper Andrew Chapman hit 22, and Richard Chapman was unbeaten on 24 as Shropshire were bowled out by Yorkshire for 98 with 15 balls remaining.

That gave Yorkshire 15 of the 19 points they needed to overhaul Shropshire and finish second in the group, so their reply, which was interrupted by rain, was a tense affair.

Yorkshire knocked off the required runs in the 25th over, but the three wickets picked up by Shropshire, with Dave Williams claiming two of them, meant Shropshire finished second by a single point to qualify for the next stage.
